I have been a pirate hobbiest for many years now. I have used a myriad of different antennas, both vertical and horizontally polarized. The difference is that if you are using a vertical antenna, then you have far less coverage to those who are using home stereos. If you are transmitting horizontally, then you are leaving out those who listen in their cars.

It isn't enough to transmit both vertically and horizontally, because then there is signal loss because you are splitting the power between 2 antennas.

I have been working on a "Ring and Stub" antenna which is circular. Circular polarization is different than vertical+horizontal as the signals from each plane combine to create a rotating ball of signal which turns like a screw. The advantage to this type of antenna is that it offers coverage not only for both horizontal AND vertical listeners, but it also fills in the "holes" in your signal area... Places within your coverage area where the signal is weak or non-existent.

I will keep you up to date on the progress of this antenna and will make the plans available for it once it is completed.
